In the southwest of France in a peaceful countryside among rolling hills and meandering waterways, picturesque villages and criss-crossed by appealing walks, you will find this old watermill.

The pilgrim road of Santiago de Compostela passes through the picturesque village of Nanteuil-en-Vallée, 7 kilometers away.

The gîte*** apartment:

023The first floor of the watermill has been converted to a gîte*** apartment with self-catering. After having walked up the stairs you enter the well-equipped kitchen-living room and then you arrive at the first bedroom that is situated towards the courtyard. Having crossed this bedroom you 024come to the second bedroom that is o n t h e g a r d en side with the view over the stream and the garden. Both bedrooms have two single beds each, 90x200 cm. The spacious bathroom is reached through the kitchen/living room towards the garden

  • Furniture and colours harmonize with the beautiful and uplifting paintings by the contemporary Swedish painter Jette Stoltz. Her paintings adorn all the rooms in the mill.
  • A cot and high chair is available.

Activities:

Walking:
The area is particularly rich in well marked and pleasant footpaths. There are 13 circuits on the two Champagne-Mouton maps, ranging in distance from 6 to 16 kilometers.
 

Your hostess Annika is happy to accompany you on walks if you would like her to. She belongs to the local walking group and knows walkers and nice walks all over the Charente.
Why not combine walking with a meal in one of the nice restaurants in the area along with exploring the rich cultural heritage, especially the Romanesque churches?

Cycling:
There are four bicycles to borrow and the area is very nice for cycling.

Romaneque Architecture:
There are many roman churches in the area along with the monasteries. A visit to the gallo-roman baths in Chassenon is always appreciated.

Chateaux:
La Rochefoucauld, La Rochebrune, St Germain de Confolens, Verteuil and many others.

Local markets:
Every Tuesday and Friday morning there is a market in Champagne Mouton.
There are also local producers markets regularly throughout the summer where one can eat one’s evening meal with the locals.

Festivals:
There are many festivities and events throughout the year, please ask for current information.

Fishing:
You are welcome to fish in the pond on the property. L’Argent that passes the property is a river of the first fishing category.

Bathing:
There is excellent bathing in the lakes in Haute-Charente and in the Charente river, 15 to 40 minutes drive away. The sea with the beaches along the Atlantic is two hours drive away.

Canoeing and climbing:

Futuroscope, La Valée des Singes, Le Village de Mouton. Various gardens and Arboretums.

Cognac and the distilleries.

Limoges and the china factories.

House hunting:
There are a number of real estate agents that will show you houses that are for sale in the area. You will find houses in all categories of price and comfort, a lot of them very interesting objects. Ruffec has a TGV fast train connection to Paris something that is very valuable as you will be able to park your car without the hassle of the bigger towns.

Moulin de Guitry is situated in the north-east of the Charente (16) department.

  • 1 hour drive from Poitiers or Limoges. 45 minutes from Angoulême.
  • Closest train station is Ruffec en Charente (16) which has a stop a day by the TGV from Paris. Montparnasse 17:15, Ruffec 19:44.
  • You are welcome to Moulin de Guitry even if you don’t come by car.
  • Closest trainstation with car hire is Poitiers where many TGV trains arrive daily from Paris, Gare Montparnasse.
  • Airports: Limoges, Poitiers, Angoulême, Bordeaux.
  • Moulin de Guitry is signposted in Champagne-Mouton, direction Civray.

Moulin de Guitry:

The watermill Moulin de Guity is present on maps from the the 14th Moulin de Guitrycentury but the current buildings are a lot younger, from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. The mill was working up until the middle of the last century. The bakery was working up until 1976.

Your hostess:

Your Swedish hostess, Annika Florenstam, has lived in her mill sinceAnnika Florenstam 1993 and knows well the region and speaks French and English apart from her native Swedish. Annika lives on the ground floor of the mill with her two dogs and four cats. The guests at the mill and Annika share the entrance that is also a library and has lots of information on the area.

The garden:

The garden of 3 ha consists of a mixture of shrubs, trees, lawn and meadow with cut paths to walk around and find one’s favourite spot. A Rose is A Rose is A RoseThroughout the garden one feels and hears the presence of water, gently moving or rapidly falling, depending upon if you are by the canal, the rapids, the pond or the stream. A favourite spot is the hammock by the lock surrounded by falling water on two sides. You will find flowers growing everywhere, planted or wild.

  • There is a small vegetable garden, an orchard and some sheep in a field.
  • At your disposal is a barbecue, garden furniture and a small rowing boat.
  • The outside seating area at your disposal is fenced off from the river for the safety of your children.
  • Moulin de Guitry is very suitable for children, who love being here.

The surroundings:

The small town of Champagne-Mouton is one kilometre away.
There you will find a market twice a week, bakery, supermarket,
post office, bank, pharmacy etc.

The countryside is lovely with rolling hills and picturesque
villages.
